18 Weeks Post Surgery (four months out)

So, this week includes the four month mark (on Friday) although I don’t have another check-up until March.  I only get those every three months at this point.  I believe that I am doing well.  I had a hiccup around Christmas but my weight is dropping again and I mostly feel good.  Not drinking while I eat is still a struggle for me.  I want to so badly and it seems so natural.  I am sure I will get used to this but it isn’t exactly a switch I can turn off.

My hair is falling out!  I don’t know if it is really happening that much more than it was but it certainly feels like it.  I am taking a multi-vitamin and biotin daily (and a B-12 gummy when I remember) but apparently it isn’t quite doing what I need it to do.  My head doesn’t have bald spots or anything but I definitely think my hair is thinner than it was six months ago.  For years now, my hair has been way thinner than back when I was a teenager but I just kind of expect that.  Okay, maybe not expect it but I was not too worried.  At this point, though, I worry that it is malnutrition and could get bad.  I had better step up my nutrition game.

Today was not a great day for me, number-wise.  My weight went up (although not by too much) and my blood sugar was high.

I started taking a new Multivitamin today because I ran out of the old ones.  They are CostCo’s private brand and claim to be “specially formulated” but since they do not have a unique focus, I do not know what is special about them other than their huge size but I don’t tend to have trouble swallowing pills, so that is okay.  I was going to do a highlighting thing where I point out what it has more vs. less of but the units are different for some vitamins (mg or mcg vs. IU) but it does have more of most things with a notable exception in calcium.  I don’t worry about calcium very much though because I drink a reasonable amount of milk (well, chocolate milk now that I have discovered Nestle Quik without sugar) and I eat yogurt most days.  Anyway, I got a giant bottle of Kirkland Signature vitamins with 500 tablets on sale for $11, so I am pretty pleased with myself.  The Supplement facts are as follow:

  • Vitamin A, 897 mcg (17% as Beta-Carotene)
  • Vitamin C, 90 mg
  • Vitamin D3, 10 mcg / 400 IU
  • Vitamin E, 13 mg
  • Vitamin K, 25 mcg
  • Thamin (Vitamin B-1), 1.5 mg
  • Riboflavin (Vitamin B-2), 1.7 mg
  • Niacin, 20 mg
  • Vitamin B6, 2 mg
  • Folate, 850 mcg DFE (500 mcg Folic Acid)
  • Vitamin B12, 6 mcg
  • Biotin, 30 mcg
  • Pantothenic Acid, 10 mg
  • Calcium, 200 mg
  • Iron, 18 mg
  • Phosphorus, 109 mg
  • Iodine, 150 mcg
  • Magnesium, 100 mg
  • Zinc, 11 mg
  • Selenium, 55 mg
  • Copper, 0.9 mg
  • Manganese, 2.3 mg
  • Chromium, 35 mcg
  • Molybdenum, 45 mcg
  • Chloride, 72 mg
  • Potassium, 80 mg
  • Silicon, 2 mg
  • Lycopene, 300 mcg
  • Lutein, 250 mcg
  • Boron, 150 mcg
  • Vanadium, 10 mcg
  • Nickel, 5 mcg

belly 4 monthsMy stomach scars are doing well, I think.  I really should look at these pictures in comparison to those right after surgery to be sure, but they do seem to have healed well and be fading despite my tendency toward hyper-pigmentation.  Obviously the one where my stomach was taken out is the biggest splotch but even that is getting more minimal by the day, so I feel pretty decent about this progress at four months.

Weight: 194.2 lbs

Food:

  • Eggs
  • Chocolate milk
  • Basmati rice
  • Yogurt
  • Palak Paneer
  • Chicken Curry
  • Tea

I made two kinds of curry today!  As always, I kind of overcooked the chicken but it still reminded me of my childhood and made me want pappu (dal).  Maybe I will make some of that next week.

Weight: 194.2 lbs (with some clothes on)

Food:

  • Eggs
  • French Toast
  • Hash browns
  • Bacon
  • Melon
  • Pineapple
  • Grapes
  • Strawberry
  • Crystal Light
  • Pickles
  • Chili
  • Chicken Curry

I have never really liked pig meats (well, that sounds harsher than I mean it to).  I have recently decided though that bacon is okay in small amounts.  For example, on loaded potato soup.  In this case, I crumbled up about half a piece and mixed in in with my hash browns – it really adds something.  I don’t see myself ever eating a lot of the stuff but like egg yolks, I have decided it can enhance taste in small amounts.
